Top Plays for NFL Thursday Contests
After several weeks where the top salary guys were my favorite picks, we finally have some value at every position! There are a lot of guys I love this week, due to some fantastic matchups and good prices. Hopefully these picks will help turn your Thursday lineup into a profitable one.
Cam Newton ($7,800 on FanDuel, $8,000 on DraftKings)
17, 7, and 12. These are the number of times Newtons has run the ball in the last 3 weeks. While Cam hasn’t had much success this year aside from the Bengals game in week 6, Newton has been a fantasy force in the past years due to his legs. He was banged up to start the season, but those running numbers suggest that he’s finally healthy and should start putting up the numbers we’re used to. The Saints D has been a bottom 10 defense this year, so I expect Newton at home to have an easy time running and throwing against them. At only $7,800, a player with this type of floor is foolish to pass up.
Honorable Mention: Joe Flacco
Andre Ellington ($7,700 on FanDuel, $5,900 on DraftKings)
Ellington has several things going for him this weekend. First and foremost, Stefan Taylor is out indefinitely, so the player who has been vulturing Ellington’s goal-line touches is gone. I’m sure the Cardinals will bring someone up to replace Taylor, but my expectation is Ellington will see most, if not all, the goal-line touches in this game. Dallas, as we know, is terrible against TEs, but this is mostly due to their poor LB play. Ellington runs several designed pass routes every game, and will be matched up on the Cowboys LBs. He should have a field day in the pass game. Lastly, Tony Romo may not even play, and even if he does, he’s banged up. This game should stay close, or be favorable for Arizona, which means Ellington should almost certainly get plenty of touches. My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw Ellington’s salary on DraftKings, in a PPR scoring system with this matchup, Ellington is a ridiculous play.
Honorable Mention: Jeremy Hill (Gio Bernard likely out)
Kenny Britt ($5,300 on FanDuel, $3,100 on DraftKings)
This one is probably the first surprise of the list for you, but let me explain myself. Brian Quick is out for the season, So Britt is now the defacto #1 receiver. San Francisco is a huge favorite in this game so Austin Davis and the Rams offense will be forced to throw a lot. The 49ers defense has a good reputation, but their pass coverage has been severely lacking this season. In general, I like saving at WR on FanDuel to help pay up for some of the high salary guys, so I’ll take a $5,300 #1 WR with a good matchup all day.
Honorable Mention: Dez Bryant
Julius Thomas ($7,800 on FanDuel, $5,600 on DraftKings)
Julius Thomas has been a major dud the past 2 weeks, but he’s going to be a big part Denver’s game plan this week. New England’s strength on defense is their secondary with Darelle Revis and Brandon Browner, so they should do at least a reasonable job containing Sanders and Demaryius. This leaves an opening for Julius to be targeted frequently. In what will likely be the highest scoring game of the weekend, I think Julius bounces back in a big way.
Honorable Mention: Rob Gronkowski
Billy Cundiff ($4,600)
Cundiff is cheap, a good kicker, and on a Browns team that is a big favorite this week.
49ers ($5,200 on FanDuel, $3,200 on DraftKings)
The 49ers are facing a Rams team down their best WR. They are huge favorites and at home. Not much else to this pick.View all posts by Max J Steinberg
