Breaking Down the Nuggets’ Backcourt Situation 1/31

First off, the Nuggets are the team I watch/follow the closest. Still, there are a lot of different scenarios that could happen since we still lack definite info for tonight’s game vs. the Raptors.

Reports are that Nate Robinson has a torn ACL, although he’s getting a second opinion today. Ty Lawson is a game-time decision with his shoulder injury, but VegasInsider has him listed as doubtful, the spread is only Denver -2 and the over/under is only 204. The Nuggets played slower against the Bobcats with their lack of backcourt depth and that’s what those lines represent. I don’t think Lawson suits up. Andre Miller still hasn’t played since his argument with Brian Shaw on Jan. 1 vs. the 76ers, but Shaw is considering activating him for tonight.

One way or another, Foye is going to get a ridiculous number of plays since he put up 52.25 FPTS on Wednesday. Foye benefitted from Robinson going down early and took over at PG to play a season-high 40 minutes and score a career-high 33 points. This is usually a play I’d fade because a lot of people will start Foye from being recently biased, but given the circumstances, I don’t think you can pass him up for that salary.

Assuming Lawson is out, Miller’s activated and DeMar DeRozan starts, he’s a must-play. Here’s why: Kyle Lowry is a much better defender than DeRozan. Lowry will take on Miller and DeRozan will take Foye.

If DeRozan doesn’t play, look for Greivis Vasquez to start at SG, but defend Miller at PG and Lowry will take the more versatile Foye (this cross matchup happened in against the Magic when Lowry defended Victor Oladpio and Vasquez guarded Jameer Nelson).

If Miller isn’t activated , then Foye is a fantastic start since his minutes will be through the roof. However, I think Evan Fournier is a better play in that scenario. He received 38 minutes and cashed in with 40.75 FPTS on Wednesday. He’s still only $3,300. He will likely get a much lower percentage of plays and will give better value than Foye since DeRozan would guard him. I have Foye in for now over Fournier since I believe Miller will be activated, but I could make a switch pending incoming news.

If Lawson does suit up and Miller is activated, I don’t like anyone in the Nuggets backcourt. Lowry won’t let Lawson get to his salary, Miller isn’t a good fantasy player (also won’t get big minutes regardless), Foye will get too many plays for me to like him at $4,700 and Fournier will see his usual 20 minutes off the bench.
