MLB DraftKings Plays: Great Values, SB Matchups, and Pitcher
Tonight, DraftKings is running the $500,000 MLB Sweet Spot. It’s only $27 to enter, and 1st place wins $50,000. It will likely have an overlay, so even if it’s your first time playing MLB you could make a profitable lineup even with a little knowledge. Mark Canha (1B/OF $3,400) – Canha is a 26 year old rookie who was never a highly touted prospect, but the As really like him and he continues to bat 2nd in the Athletics order. Steamer doesn’t project Canha as a great hitter, but he’s been outperformed expectations significantly so far this season. Even if you believe Steamer’s projections for a sub .700 OPS season, Canha is still one of the best hitting values of the night. And he has the added benefit of going from the Oakland Colliseum, a pitchers park, to Houston, a great hitter’s park.
Yangervis Solarte (2B/3B $3,000) – In the past, daily fantasy baseball players have shied away from playing any Padres at home, since Petco Park is such a pitchers park. But San Diego has moved the outfield walls in twice in the past few years, and slowly Petco Park has become more and more of a hitters park, especially for lefties (although it’s still certainly not ideal for hitting). Solarte is a switch hitter but bats much better from his left side, and is batting 2nd in the order for the Padres. At only $3,000, he’s a ridiculous bargain.
Steve Pearce (1B/OF $4,000) – Pearce may not be a name you know, but he’s batting clean up tonight for the Orioles and is actually a very, very good hitter, especially against lefties. In his career, he has a .872 OPS against them and faces a pitcher in CC Sabathia who’s a complete shell of his former self. Pearce had one of the best seasons of his career last season with a .900+ OPS, and Steamer doesn’t think it’s a fluke, projecting him at a solid .820 OPS this season. He’s one of the top projected performers tonight regardless of salary, and his price makes him an absolute must-play tonight.
Stolen Base Plays
Christian Yelich (OF $4,600) and Dee Gordon (2B/SS $4,700) – It’s a dream matchup tonight for Gordon and Yelich. They face Trevor Cahill, a righty who struggles in all the right areas. He’s very bad against lefties, has a high walk rate and a -3 rSB, and his battery mate, A.J. Pierzynski, is a poor defensive catcher. Gordon and Yelich should both have an easy time getting on base and an easy time stealing once they’re on. Note: Yelich scratched with a sore back, Ichiro batting 2nd in the order and is great value at $3,200.
Pitcher Must Play
Matt Harvey ($9,300) – Put Matt Harvey in your lineup. He could very well be the NL Cy Young winner this year when things are all said and done, and he has a cake matchup vs the Phillies awful lineup. His price should be $12,000 tonight. Absolutely do not fade this man, especially with such weak options at pitcher otherwise.View all posts by Max J Steinberg
