Daily Fantasy Baseball 8/1/2014: Complete SB and GB/FB Breakdown

This isn’t so much of an article as it is my own notes for the Super Monster tonight. Use as you see fit.

Some definitions of scale.

GB/FB Scale: 1-10 scale on whether the pitcher gives up predominately ground balls or fly balls.

1 = Extreme GB, 10 = Extreme FB.

SB Rating: 1-10 scale on how vulnerable the pitcher is to stolen bases.

PHI @ WAS

Roberto Hernandez:

GB/FB: 1

SB Rating: 9

Hernandez gives up tons of stolen bases and throws predominantly sinker balls and change ups.

CIN @ MIA

Mat Latos:

GB/FB: 8.5

SB Rating: 7.5

Latos is 6’6″ so he’s vulnerable to stolen bases and has moved more extreme FB this year as he’s throwing more 4 seams and change ups.

Jarred Cosart:

GB/FB: 1

SB Rating: 2

Throws a ton of cutters and curveballs, atypical of GB pitchers who tend to mostly throw sinkers and two seam fastballs.

SFG @ NYM

Ryan Vogelsong:

GB/FB: 7.5

SB Rating: 4

Throws a mostly offspeed pitches and 4 seams.

Jon Niese

GB/FB: 3

SB Rating: 2

Two seams and Cutters help Niese achieve a lot of ground balls.

Wily Peralta

GB/FB: 1.5

SB Rating: 4.5

Lots of two seamers and sliders.

[email protected]

Edinson Volquez

GB/FB: 6.5

SB Rating: 5

At points in his career, Volquez has been extremely vunerable to stolen bases, but has not this season, possibly because of a change in approach or a better catcher in Russell Martin. Throws Predominantly Sinkers.

Vidal Nuno

GB/FB: 9.5

SB Rating: 0

Has given up one stolen base in his entire career so it’s not happening. Pitch distribution atypical of FB pitcher with two seams and sliders.

Kyle Hendricks:

GB/FB: 5

SB Rating: 5

Not a big sample of anything to really make a good assessment. Gave up a lot of SB in the minors, and throws a lot of change ups which is more typical of FB pitcher, but has thrown mostly GBs so far.

Eric Stults:

GB/FB: 8.5

SB Rating: 3

Lots of change ups and four seams.

[email protected]

Roenis Elias:

GB/FB: 7

SB Rating: 2

Small sample, but throws enough 4 seams and change ups to assume FB pitcher.

Wei-Yin Chen

GB/FB: 8

SB Rating: 2.5

[email protected]

Jerome Williams

GB/FB: 3.5

SB Rating: 5

Danny Salazar

GB/FB: 9.5

SB Rating: 4.5

[email protected]

Matt Shoemaker

GB/FB: 7

SB Rating: 4

Jeremy Hellickson

GB/FB: 9

SB Rating: 2.5

[email protected]

Chris Capuano

GB/FB: 7

SB Rating: 2

Odd sinkerballer who is a flyball pitcher.

Anthony Ranaudo

GB/FB: 6

SB Rating: 8

No data but Ranaudo is tall so that lends itself to being bad against basestealers and being a FB pitcher. Ross is quite a good catcher though so that probably cancels out.

[email protected]

J.A. Happ

GB/FB: 9.5

SB Rating: 6

Happ is a 6’6″ lefty so he is not as good as a typical lefty against SB. Dream matchup for Jose Altuve.

Colin McHugh

GB/FB: 8

SB Rating: 4

[email protected]

Logan Darnell

GB/FB: 5

SB Rating: 3

Throws a lot of two seams and change ups which kind of cancel each other out as far as GB/FB goes. Not much data.

[email protected]

Jeremy Guthrie

GB/FB: 7

SB Rating: 2.5

[email protected]

Franklin Morales

GB/FB: 6

SB Rating: 3

Justin Verlander

GB/FB: 8

SB Rating: 9

Tall righty, gives up tons of stolen bases for an AL team.
